PRESS RELEASE
January 15, 2010

IMMEDIATE RELEASE********************
KEYS TO SAFE WINTER DRIVING
Winter is upon us again and winter road
conditions are here till spring. With a little forethought and some simple
preparation we can get through another winter unscathed.
1. Easy
does it! Do not break hard and do not jerk the steering wheel. While driving
on slick surfaces everything you do should be done gently slowly and easily.
2. Increase
following distances. Even if you are in control; others may not be. If the
car if front of you goes out of control can you stay out of the way?
3. Watch
out for snow removal equipment. These can be Municipal plow trucks doing the
roads themselves or smaller private contractors doing lots and drives.
4. You’ll
have better traction the heavier your car is. Keep your tank full and for rear
wheel drive cars carry extra weight in the trunk.
5. Be
extra careful on ramps. Many accidents occur on ramps when roads are slick.
6. Be
extra careful on bridges and overpasses. They will freeze first because they
are exposed underneath.
7. If
you are in a remote area do not leave your vehicle if you get stuck or caught in
a blizzard. Stay in it and wait for help.
When it comes to harsh winter conditions, being
prepared is especially important. Be prepared by putting together your own
personal “care package” of extra warm clothes and survival gear. Some basic
items you should include are:
Cell phone and charger,
Extra warm clothes, Winter boots, Gloves and hat, Blanket, Lighter & matches,
Candles, Flashlight, Water.
Be prepared by getting good
weather reports. Several sources are:
1. Radio-
AM/FM, weather band radio
2. Internet
- Many sites are devoted to weather
3. Calling
home- Ask family and/or friends to watch weather channel or news for updates.
4. CB
radio- can call ahead for road conditions.
Be prepared by
knowing how to recognize a dangerous road or situation.
1. Watch
for spray from other vehicles. If there is spray it probably is not freezing.
2. Watch
other vehicles. Are they slipping & sliding or fishtailing? Are you seeing
cars in ditches? These are indicators that the road may be slicker than you
think.
3. Ice
build-up on windshield where wipers don’t cover indicates its freezing.
Be prepared by knowing your own limitations.
Only you can judge when it’s safe for you to continue on when roads become bad.
You are always better arriving late than not arriving at all.
